Marie Sams was a co-founder of The Joseph Sams School in l984 and currently serves on the school’s Board of Directors. Since her retirement as Executive Director in 2012, she has continued to assist in grant writing for the organization.
Born and raised in Waycross, Georgia, Marie received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University in 1975 and a Master of Education from Georgia State University in 1977. She has fifteen years of experience as a classroom teacher in both regular and special education and fifteen years of experience in special education administration. In addition to serving as Executive Director of JSS, throughout her 35 years of working with and for the school, she has also coordinated fundraising events and served as a classroom teacher as well as Program Director.
Prior to her retirement in 2012, Marie was certified in MOVE (Mobility Opportunity via Education) as an International Trainer, trained in PECS (Picture Exchange Communication) and was also a member of CEC (Council for Exceptional Children).
Marie’s son, Joseph, was one of the original students of The Joseph Sams School (formerly The Early Years). Today the school is named in his memory. In her spare time, Marie enjoys running, exercising, reading, and spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren.
